Wisdom Tooth Extraction: Aftercare

We get to see our Wisdom Teeth in our late teens or early twenties. In specific cases Wisdom Teeth turns to be a worthy asset to your mouth if strong and well aligned. But most of the time, they are not aligned well and primarily need removal. Wisdom teeth extraction is actually a serious oral surgery.
Anytime we undergo any surgery, we all want it to let it heal properly and quickly. So here, we have prepared a list of wisdom teeth extraction do’s and don’ts.

The Do's:

  • Rest. Relax yourself for the next couple of days.

  • Elevate your head. This lessens your amount of swelling.

  • Use an ice pack for the first 24-48 hours after extraction. Icing minimizes your pain and lessens your swelling. Apply the ice packs 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off for 1-2 hour time periods.

  • Bite on your cotton gauze. The pressure helps bleeding to stop.

  • Keep your mouth clean. Gargle with salt-water solution at least once a day.

  • Intake liquid and soft food for a few days. For example: soups, milkshakes, mashed potatoes, yogurts, etc.

  • Chew from the other side. It’s essential not to disturb the injured area in your gum and leave it to heal.

  • Drink adequate amounts of fluids especially water – but do not use straw!

  • Brush gently. Start to brush from the second day after your surgery is done. But remember: don’t brush the wisdom tooth extraction area.

The Don’ts:

  • Avoid using straws. Don’t suck, spit, smoke or drink alcohol. If the clot becomes dislodged somehow, you may experience more bleeding, and pain. Later on, this may turn into dry sockets.

  • Don’t eat, drink or talk instantly after your surgery.

  • Stay away from solid foods. Avoid consuming popcorn, nuts and other hard or crunchy foods for at least a week. Also stay away from hot or carbonated drinks.

  • Don’t take aspirin. It’s a blood thinner and delays in clot formation.

  • Stop icing after the first 48 hours after your wisdom teeth extraction. Use hot water on your extraction area. It gives you little relief.

  • Don’t poke into the gap created with your finger, tongue, toothpick or tissue. It may delay your healing.

  • Don’t rinse your mouth too vigorously. The pressure may dislodge the blood clot and result in complications.

Finally, go to your dentist if bleeding continues after 24 hours or you undergo discomfort or fever.
